It all began...

The performance of poetry began a long, long time ago. My performance journey had many beginnings.

It all began in 1978, when I was asked to read to my Year 8 English class an excerpt from S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders including a poem by Robert Frost.

And it all began in 1999, when I teamed up with a visual artist, an actor, and a drum healer for an event we called Chrysalis: The Emergence of Spirit.

And it all began in 2019 when, on a whim, I entered the Spoken Word SA Summer Slam, was awarded Runner Up and was embraced by the Adelaide poetry community.

And it all began in 2026 with a somewhat autobiographical show, All Roads Lead to Bowie, at Adelaide Fringe Festival with friend and Ellipsis Poetry colleague, Jazz Fechner-Lante (pictured).

Live poetry, whether it be an open mic, curated reading, or spoken word poetic theatre event, is alive and well in Adelaide and I feel like I am right in the centre of it.

All Roads Lead to Bowie

This is the mostly true story of a youth worker and a volunteer.

The worker is 50 years old, recently became a grandmother, is burning out fast, and questions her ongoing relevance in the job. But she has her reasons for staying. For now.

The volunteer, at 16, struggles each day with a lack of resources and a lack of agency. They are living a life that doesn’t seem like their own, a life out of their control. Perhaps they can help themself while helping others.

These two people come together to support a cohort of young people at risk. They bond over their shared commitment. But mostly, they bond over the music, and the lyrics, of David Bowie.

Written and performed by Pam Makin and Jazz Fechner-Lante of Ellipsis Poetry, All Roads Lead to Bowie premiered at Adelaide Fringe in 2026. It was well-received and encore performances have been planned for Adelaide and the regions.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the people who donated their time, talent and resources to make this debut production possible: Nick Falkner for his voice, Matt Pearce for his sound recordings, Ian Gibbins for the beautiful photos, the Town of Walkerville for the venue, Page & Turner in the Myer Centre for writing space, and the Ellipsis Poetry community for their ongoing support.

All Roads Lead to Bowie is dedicated to Alison Paradoxx Bennett. We hope we did her proud.

Open Mic

The other best place to see and hear me perform is at an open mic. There are plenty around Adelaide and I have read at most of them. I regularly read at Spoke n' Slurred.

I occasionally tell a story at TenX9 too.
